Michael W. Smith Reimagines “There She Stands” With New Recording Honoring 25 Years Since 9/11
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (September 11, 2026) — More than two decades after its original release, Michael W. Smith is bringing new life to “There She Stands,” a song born out of the grief and uncertainty following 9/11.
Originally recorded about 24 years ago, the song was inspired in part by a conversation Smith had with President George W. Bush during that time and became a deeply personal expression of what he was witnessing in America – the resilience, unity and hope that emerged in the midst of unimaginable loss.
Now, as the nation marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Smith has revisited the song with a new vision. This reimagined version builds on the heart of the original with a powerful drum line and brass arrangement, creating a larger, more cinematic sound. One of the song’s most emotional moments comes in the second chorus, when the instrumentation drops away and Smith’s voice stands alone before being met by a sweeping wall of horns.
For Smith, revisiting “There She Stands” has been an emotional experience, bringing him back to the feelings and memories surrounding the song’s original recording.
“I’ve wanted to reimagine this song for a long time, and I finally got the chance to bring that vision to life,” Smith shares. “Every time I sing it, I still get emotional.”
With “There She Stands,” Smith hopes to honor the past while reminding listeners of the strength, unity and hope that can rise from even the darkest moments.
“I hope it moves you the way it has moved me.”
